The Function of Stir/Shaken Solution in the Fight Against Robocalls and False Caller ID

How Stir/Shaken Works 

Stir/Shaken employs a combination of cryptographic certificates and digital signatures to verify the authenticity of calls. The process involves two main entities: the originating service provider (OSP) and the terminating service provider (TSP). 

  1. Originating Service Provider (OSP)
  2. The OSP initiates the call and signs it using a private key, creating a digital signature. 
  3. The OSP attaches a "token" to the call, which contains important information about the call's origin and the caller's identity. 
  4. The OSP then sends the call, along with the signature and token, to the TSP. 
  5. Terminating Service Provider (TSP): 
  6. The TSP receives the call and verifies the signature using the OSP's public key. 
  7. The TSP checks the token's information against the call details to ensure consistency. 
  8. Based on the verification results, the TSP can determine the call's legitimacy and make informed decisions about call treatment, such as blocking or allowing it to proceed.

The implementation of Stir/Shaken offers several benefits in the fight against robocalls and false caller ID: 


  1. Caller ID Authentication : - Stir/Shaken enables TSPs to authenticate incoming calls, ensuring that the caller ID information is genuine and not spoofed.

  4. Industry Standardization : - Stir/Shaken provides a standardized framework for call authentication, making it easier for service providers to implement and collaborate across networks.
